TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - It's been six months since the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

The earthquake killed thousands and caused mass destruction throughout the country.

One Wabash Valley resident recently returned from the country; a country still in recovery and desperate need of help.

"Coming into Port au Prince is like nothing I had ever experienced before," Terre Haute resident Ron Keegan said. "It was shocking"

Keegan lived in Haiti for 3 months offering his help through Samaritan's Purse an international relief organization.

He said several buildings remain untouched and bodies are still buried deep beneath the rubble.

"I don't think I ever saw a single family down there that hadn't lost someone relatively close to them," Keegan said.

One-point-5 million Haitians are still living in temporary tents 6 months after the earthquake.

"It's basically four sticks with a couple pieces of metal wrapped and a piece around it, that's their home," Keegan said.

Keegan said he saw a low of progress but there's so much need. He said it will be years before you see adequate recovery.

Haiti is a country that was in need of help long before the earthquake even hit.

To put Haiti's need into perspective, the country had an 80 to 90 percent unemployment rate before the earthquake.

It's not too late to help, click here or here more information.
