Severe weather hits Vincennes

VINCENNES, Ind. (WTHI) - After weeks of little to no rain, southern Indiana was hit with some dangerous storms Sunday night.

The severe weather hit during the seven o'clock hour.

Tree limbs fell and power lines were down.

In Knox County, Duke Energy reported almost 9,000 residents without power.

The roof of a building in the Autumn Ridge Apartment Complex was torn off by high winds.

The blast of severe weather left many residents shaken. They described the weather that ripped the roof off as very powerful.

"Winds to the point it was bending the trees and blowing debris," Michael Devine explained. "You almost had to duck to keep from getting hit."

"It's a typical storm we've seen so many times before," Vincennes Fire Chief Gordon Becher explained. "There's nothing, then here comes the wind, here comes the hail, here comes the strong rain. We got it all at once and that's what happened to this building here."

Those strong winds knocked down trees all over the city, and in one spot firefighters were called to help get people out of a mobile home crashed by a tree.

Authorities were unable to say whether there were any injuries as a result of the storm.

A temporary shelter has been set up for anyone displaced by this storm at the National Guard Armory.
