Ruling could leave 290K Hoosiers uncovered

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A report says nearly 300,000 adults could be left without health care coverage if Indiana doesn't change its Medicaid program following the Supreme Court's health care ruling.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports (http://bit.ly/QNUPxE ) that Indiana Medicaid only covers adults under 65 if they have children and their household income is only 24 percent of the federal poverty level.

The court ruling gave states the option of going along with a Medicaid expansion that would cover families with incomes up to 133 percent of poverty level. IBJ says families slightly over poverty level will still be eligible for government subsidies to buy private health insurance.

IBJ says if Indiana doesn't expand Medicaid coverage, families with incomes between 24 percent and 100 percent of poverty level couldn't get Medicaid or subsidies.
