FULTON COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - State Road 31 southbound was closed for mopst of Tuesday in Fulton County between the State Road 14 overpass and County Road 50 North due to a single vehicle crash that left one dead.

Indiana State Police responded to a report of a crash at US 31 and State Road 14 at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Police's preliminary investigation has found that the vehicle involved was a UPS semi-tractor pulling two trailers which had been southbound on US 31. The driver of that semi, 53-year-old Robert Bozell of Tipton, Indiana, left the road for an unknown reason and struck a concrete pillar which supports the State Road 14 overpass.

Bozell was wearing a seat belt but police said the impact was too severe for this safety measure to prevent his death.

The concrete pillar was inspected by Indiana Department of Transportation representatives, who said the pillar did not suffer any structural damage in the crash.

The trailers contained various consumer items which had been picked up at a UPS center in Chicago, Illinois, and were headed for a center in Kokomo, Indiana. Police said that there is a large debris field and that UPS is off-loading any goods that can be salvaged.

State Road 14 was closed for approximately one hour while the overpass was inspected for damage, but has been re-opened.

This accident is still under investigation.
