INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WTHI) - Members of Indiana's law enforcement community gathered in Indianapolis on Wednesday to remember those officers lost in the line of duty.
In a memorial service they welcomed three new families to a group none of them wanted to join. But, their family members' sacrifices in the line of duty brought them to the Indiana Law Enforcement Fallen Heroes Wall.
One of those three families was that of Terre Haute K-9 officer Brent Long.
In the shadow of Indiana's lawmaking body, Hoosier law enforcement officers gathered to remember those who died while serving and protecting.
Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) welcomed the family of Brent Long and two other families into their support group.
The Fraternal Order of Police presented all three families with the Supreme Sacrifice Crystal and the Fallen Heroes Wall had each officer's name added to it.
For the first time, Wednesday, the families saw their loved ones names etched into the wall for the rest of time.
Alongside every Indiana law enforcement officer who has lost their life serving and protecting.
"I mean this is obviously more personal, unfortunately, for us. We don't wanna forget everyone that's given their lives and we don't wanna say their loss is any less than ours, but Brent was one of ours," Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse said.
