TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - In an effort to keep highway workers safe, Indiana State Police are keeping a close eye on construction zones.

When a construction zone is set up along anyway Indiana state highway, state troopers can sign up to work a federally funded program called the INDOT Zone Program.

The program was created to help keep highway workers safe.

Assigned troopers focus on slowing down traffic and by just having a presence they can regulate the area and remind drivers to obey work zone speed limits.
Senior Trooper Ty Lightle says what they’re looking for is voluntarily compliance.

“Now tickets do get written in the construction zone and sometimes they are more expensive but the reason we are here is to monitor the public; asking them to voluntarily slow down and pay attention. That's why were are here to keep the workers safe and everyone else traveling the roadways of Indiana,” said Lightle.

Senior Trooper Lightle says if you receive a ticket in a work zone the fines could increase.

Lightle says often in a work zone speeding and merging too late are usually the number one causes for accidents in a work zone.

Overall Indiana State Police say people need to slow down and pay attention.
