INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Republican leaders in the Statehouse want to approve a proposed constitutional amendment limiting property tax bills, but Democrats and local government officials want to wait to see the impact of the caps before making them more permanent.
If the Indiana General Assembly approves the proposed amendment either in 2009 or 2010, the question would appear on the ballot for voter ratification in 2010.
Republicans who control the state Senate say they want to act on the proposal next year because they feel it's part of a larger property tax package passed earlier this year.
But others want to hold off on the proposal until 2010 so that lawmakers can see how the property tax caps affect local governments and schools.
