Health officials report 4 human cases of West Nile

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana health officials say they have confirmed four human cases of West Nile virus and are urging people to take precautions against mosquito-borne diseases.

The Indiana State Department of Health said Friday that cases have been identified in Hamilton, Marion and Jackson counties.

Mosquitoes carrying the virus have been found in 62 Indiana counties so far. Health officials say the transmission of the virus within the mosquito population is much higher than in previous years.

West Nile virus can cause fever, headaches, swollen glands or a rash. More severe cases can cause encephalitis or meningitis.

Precautions include removing containers that can hold water, avoiding places where mosquitoes are biting, using insect repellent and wearing pants and long sleeves.
