Daniels portrait shows Indiana governor at work

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels appears in his official portrait as a man at work wearing a button down shirt and paisley tie, but lacking the suit coat found in other governor's portraits.

The portrait by Lafayette artist Richard Halstead was unveiled Tuesday at the Statehouse. The painting shows Daniels leaning lightly on a chair and holding a pen symbolic of his priorities he signed into law.

Daniels said at the ceremony he would have rather had a painting large enough to include all the aides and state leaders who worked closely with him. He says he hopes Hoosiers will look back on him and see a man who "fulfilled good intentions."

The Republican will become Purdue University's president when his eight years as governor end in January.
