INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Hundreds of people attended a prayer service welcoming the new Catholic archbishop for Indianapolis ahead of his formal installation Mass at 2:00 p.m. Monday.

Archbishop Joseph Tobin will be installed as leader of the Indianapolis Archdiocese during the Monday afternoon Mass at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral.

The Indianapolis Star reports Tobin walked up to the cathedral's front steps Sunday evening and knocked on its door to "lay claim" to the church from which he will lead some 225,000 Catholics in 39 counties of central and southern Indiana.

Pope Benedict named the 60-year-old Tobin to the post in October. Tobin succeeds Archbishop Daniel Buechlein, who retired last year.

The Detroit native was a former high-ranking Holy See official who tried to resolve tense relations between the Vatican and U.S nuns before his transfer.
