PAOLI, Ind. (AP) — Officials say a tornado damaged at least 25 homes and businesses as it crossed through the heart of the southern Indiana town of Paoli.
The National Weather Service says the tornado first touched down Monday night near Paoli (pay-OH'-lee) Junior-Senior High School on the town's west side. The EF1 tornado with winds up to 100 mph went east through the downtown area as it stayed on the ground for about 2 miles, although no one was hurt.
One of the most heavily damaged buildings was the Liberty Furniture Store on the courthouse square. Its metal roof was left crumpled nearly two blocks away.
Owner Dave Brown tells The Courier-Journal ( http://cjky.it/uKF05A ) that the 18 people living in the building's upstairs apartments must move until the roof is replaced.
