Used car sales top Indiana consumer complaints

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP/WTHI) - The top 10 complaints from Hoosier consumers this year are in with some familiar offenders on the list.

The Indiana attorney general's office released the annual survey for National Consumer Protection Week, which began Monday.

Topping the list: Used car sales and service. The attorney general's office advises car buyers to have their prospective vehicle inspected by an independent mechanic, to read anything they're asked to sign, and to get any guarantees in writing.

Michael Cox from Cox Cars in Terre Haute said he's worked for years to reverse the idea of the "sketchy used car salesman" in the Wabash Valley. He said he's had the most success by being transparent with his customers.

"We want the customer to know the history of the vehicle and that has really helped because they're thinking, hey they're not hiding anything," Cox said.

Number 2: Internet scams. State officials recommend never responding to requests for personal or financial information or clicking on links in unsolicited emails.

Rounding out the list: Debt collectors, lending and foreclosure scams, home repair scams, telemarketers, identity theft, retailers' refund policies, landlords and wireless phone service providers.

Sally Stewart from B and S Plumbing, Heating and Cooling in Terre Haute said she's aware of several dishonest businesses out there, but she said her business tries to put consumers first.

"We're not afraid to tell people to get another estimate. You know, we're pretty confident we are fair in our pricing and we think that's the best protection people have," Stewart said.
