OLNEY, Ill. (WTHI) - An Illinois town honors their very own unknown hero Wednesday afternoon.
A memorial service for a soldier, only those gathered here aren't just honoring one, their honoring millions, represented by one.
Members of Olney, Illinois’ Junior ROTC program found the burial plot for the tune of the Unknown Soldier last year. Since then, they’ve hosted fundraisers to build a memorial in honor of the fallen soldier.
In a dedication ceremony on Wednesday, community members gathered to show their support for the group and the local hero.
The Unknown Soldier is a mystery to much of the Illinois town.
While some knew of his existence, few people knew where in town he was hidden, and as of today, no one knows his story.
Local legend has it the Civil War soldier came in on a train in 1863
His story from there remains a mystery, but his legacy stands clear.
