SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois budget expires at midnight Tuesday, but state officials are nowhere close to agreeing on a new budget.

State government won't shut down immediately if a new budget isn't in place by the deadline, but things will get complicated if the stalemate drags on.

Government will face limits on how it can spend money, and paychecks won't go out to state employees.

The Illinois House was scheduled to meet Monday, but the Senate won't return until Tuesday.

Officials are divided over whether to close a historic budget deficit partly through a tax increase.
