Woman cited for gun detected in bag at fed court

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities say a 57-year-old suburban Chicago woman has been cited for attempting to bring a handgun into the federal courthouse downtown Chicago.

Randall Samborn is a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office. He says marshals briefly detained Debra Reed of Country Club Hills after discovering the firearm in her bag Wednesday morning.

Samborn says Reed was entering the building to sit in on a court hearing when routine security procedures detected the weapon. He didn't say what hearing.

Reed was given a misdemeanor citation for attempting to bring a firearm into a federal building. A hearing is set for June 10. She faces a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.
