Voters head to polls in ex-Rep. Jackson's district

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago-area voters are set to head to the polls in the primary election to replace former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.

There are 14 Democrats and four Republicans on Tuesday's special primary ballot. But the Democratic winner is likely headed to Washington to represent the Democrat-dominated district.

The candidates include former state Rep. Robin Kelly, former Congressman Debbie Halvorson and Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale.

Voter turnout is expected to be low. In a 2009 special primary the turnout among Chicago voters was 18 percent. The district includes Chicago suburbs and some rural areas.

Federal prosecutors allege Jackson, who resigned in June, spent $750,000 in campaign money on personal items including everything from toilet paper to mink capes.

Jackson will be sentenced in June.
