Strike at University of Illinois enters second day

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A strike of building- and food-service workers at the University of Illinois has entered a second day with no plans for a resumption of negotiations.

Nearly 800 workers represented by the Service Employees Union International went on strike Monday and continued to picket Tuesday morning at locations around the Urbana-Champaign campus. Workers plan to go back to work Thursday.

Union spokesman Adam Rosen says workers will hold a rally on Wednesday. Rosen says there is no immediate plan to resume talks with the university. Negotiations over wages and other issues began last spring.

A university spokeswoman did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday. The university has been using workers from other areas to cook and serve meals to students and handle janitorial duties.
