Illinois boy dies after dog attack

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) — Police in Galesburg are investigating the death of a 7-year-old boy who was apparently killed by a dog.

Police said they found Ryan Maxwell being bitten by the pit bull at a home he was visiting Saturday afternoon. The boy was playing the back yard. He died a short time later at a local hospital. Autopsy results were not immediately available.

Police say they pulled the dog off the boy and then the animal tried to attack them. An officer shot the dog to death.

Investigators said they had no previous reports indicating the dog to be dangerous.

Maxwell's funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
