Illinois auditor pleads guilty to drunken driving

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Auditor General William Holland has pleaded guilty to drunken driving.

Holland appeared in Sangamon County Circuit Court on Thursday. Associate Circuit Judge Rudolph Braud sentenced the 61-year Holland to a year's court supervision and ordered him to pay court fees of $1,555.

Illinois State Police stopped Holland in Springfield on Feb. 6.

He has been the state's auditor since 1992. In a statement Thursday, Holland said he made a mistake and is grateful no one was hurt or property damaged.

Holland says as auditor general he holds government officials accountable and "as a citizen, I must be held to the same standard."

Holland has been auditor general since 1992 and just last year was appointed to a third, 10-year term. He has earned high praise for his no-nonsense approach.
