Ill. lawmakers want to limit spending -- to $35K?

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois lawmakers are trying to keep a lid on spending — but run state government on $35,000?

Gov. Pat Quinn is scheduled to lay out his budget plan Wednesday for the coming year. The House weighed in Tuesday with its own spending limit — but the resolution says $35,081.

Lawmakers meant $35.1 billion. That's about $500 million less than Quinn wants to spend in general state funds.

The resolution sponsored by Speaker Michael Madigan omits any indication that the numbers are expressed in millions.

Steve Brown is spokesman for the Chicago Democrat. He says "people recognize the intent" of the measure.

It moves to the Senate where a Democratic spokeswoman was checking on whether its language needs to be cleaned up there.
