CHICAGO (AP) — Religious leaders are praying for strength for the family of a 6-month-old baby who was killed when a gunman fired at minivan in Chicago as she sat on her father's lap.
Hundreds of mourners were at the Tuesday funeral for Jonylah (juh-NEYE'-luh) Watkins. Teddy bears and flowers were at the church in the Woodlawn neighborhood where the shooting occurred.
The girl's father, 29-year-old Jonathan Watkins, was seriously wounded in the March 11 shooting. Watkins wore a white hooded sweatshirt and bowed his head over the small casket on Tuesday.
Pastor Monique McCord prayed for "supernatural strength" for the baby's family. The Rev. Corey Brooks said that "today, we are one Chicago." Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Monday that investigators would solve the baby's murder.
