JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Less than 24 hours after screaming out his innocence in court, Drew Peterson has been transferred to an Illinois prison to begin serving his 38-year sentence for the murder of his third wife.

Prison officials say the former suburban Chicago police officer was transported Friday morning to the maximum-security Stateville prison outside Joliet, which also serves as a processing center for new inmates.

A Department of Corrections spokeswoman says Peterson was later taken to the prison in Pontiac.

A judge sentenced Peterson on Thursday for killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004. He's also a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

He'll get four years credit for time served while awaiting trial.
