Day care at federal court named after Judge Lefkow

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's Dirksen Federal Courthouse has named its day care center after a current judge who advocated for its establishment a quarter century ago.

As of Friday, the facility is "The Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow (LEF'-koh) Day Care Center."

The 69-year-old Lefkow told a dedication ceremony she'd like to be considered a good judge. But she said her proudest legacy would be helping to open the day care center in 1989.

She spoke as several babies looked on quietly from their cribs. Lefkow's toddler grandson also sucked on a bottle nearby.

Lefkow has been a U.S. district judge for 12 years and a magistrate for 15 years before that.

Lefkow's husband and mother were killed in her home in 2005. The attacker had been a plaintiff in a lawsuit she dismissed.
