Crime Commission names new executive director

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Crime Commission has named a former high-level FBI official as its new executive director.

Joseph Ways Sr. served as the assistant special agent in charge of administration for the FBI's Chicago office from 2005 to 2007. Before that, he was an assistant special agent in charge of white collar crime.

The Crime Commission is a non-governmental body that has overseen crime trends in Chicago dating back before Al Capone.

Last month, it named Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman as Chicago's new Public Enemy No. 1 to publicize how the Mexican cartel now supplies most of the narcotics sold in the city. Guzman was the first figure given that label since Capone.

A Thursday news release says street-gang violence is among the crimes Ways wants to highlight.
