Chicago mayor outlines vision for 7 neighborhoods

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has unveiled his $3 billion vision for seven city neighborhoods he believes have major economic promise.

His proposal includes a permanent farmer's market, the nation's longest protected bike lane, a music district, a pedestrian bridge and an elevated boardwalk bike trail.

Emanuel told the Chicago Sun-Times (http://bit.ly/Z4ZxIA ) that most of the money comes from private-sector and university projects. He says the city's contribution would be about $350 million and would come from federal, state, city land and transportation funds, among other places.

The areas Emanuel has outlined include the city's impoverished Englewood neighborhood where Emanuel says the city could build around a community college and its culinary institute. He proposes that city land could be converted into urban agriculture sites and spur redevelopment.
