TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A white Christmas may be in the forecast this year, but you may get a green one instead.

Going green has a whole new meaning as you look to deck the halls in a environmental-friendly way.

The first on the list is the Christmas tree. Artificial trees are great from a reuse standpoint, but most are still made with petroleum-based synthetic materials.

Fresh cut trees can be ground, mulched and fully recycled after the holiday and potted Christmas trees can be replanted.

The next on the list is lights. If you're looking to buy new lights, LED lights are the green way to go. LED lights are 90 percent more efficient and can last you up to 20 years.

Last on the list is gifts. The colorful presents underneath the tree can be used again. You can recycle or reuse the wrapping paper, bows, and gift bags. You can also toss the wrapping paper aside and use newspaper to wrap presents.

Tips on replanting Christmas tree.

  • First, keep your tree moist at all times, but not muddy.
  • Next leave the tree indoors as short a duration as possible. It should not remain indoors more than 10 days.
  • Move your tree outdoors gradually. Let tree adapt from heat to the cold weather outside.
  • Dig your planting hole before the soil freezes. Store the soil where it will not freeze. The planting hol should be 24 inches wide by 18 inches deep.
  • Water your tree thoroughly when planting, and mulch with shredded wood mulch.
