Three elementary schools start wellness competition

Winner receives $6,000 for fitness equipment

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Three Vigo County elementary schools started a fitness program competition Tuesday to get students into healthier lifestyles.

The program is called "Battle of the Fit".

Ouabache, Benjamin Franklin and West Vigo Elementary schools will be participating.

The program' an eight-week competition to get students fit.

Organizers said they hope the program gets kids on a wellness track.

“We hope to demonstrate [healthier lifestyles] by incorporating physical fitness activities into everyday classrooms, and offering after school dance and running clubs.  [We want to show] we are really improving the health and well being of our Hoosier students,” said Becky Klingle of MDWise Outreach.

The winning school will get $6,000 to buy fitness equipment.

News 10’s was informed this is the second year for the program.
