VINCENNES, Ind. (WTHI) - A new scholarship has been established in memory of Brett Allison Adams from funds contributed by family and friends.
The Special Education scholarship honoring the life of Brett, who died on Aug. 30, 2011, has been created as an endowed scholarship fund at the Vincennes University Foundation.
It will provide funds for a third or fourth year student in the Special Education degree program at VU. Brett Adams was born prematurely and suffered from Cerebral Palsy and other challenges.
From an early age, she had excellent special education teachers all across the country from Los Angeles to Louisville and North Vernon, Indiana, where she received a certificate of completion from Jennings County High School. Because of the dedication of these teachers, her skills improved and she came to love school and learning.
Since many members of Brett's extended family have had a long tradition of attending VU, dating back to the 1930's, and have benefited greatly from their college experiences, Brett's parents, Dr. Cyrus and Peggy Adams of Vincennes, decided to work with the VU Foundation in the formation of
this scholarship. With this in mind, their desire was to give back in a way that would remember Brett and pass forward opportunity to students needing help.
The recipient will be a Special Education major in their third or fourth year in VU's bachelor's degree program. Financial need shall be a consideration in awarding the scholarship and the scholarship will be awarded annually to either a traditional or non-traditional student at the Vincennes campus.
"We are grateful for the thoughtfulness of Brett's family and friends in making this opportunity available to deserving students in need," stated Bumper Hostetler, president of the Vincennes University Foundation.
"Brett's spirited life of facing challenges and the caring education she received from her teachers will be passed forward to benefit future teachers."
