New: Sheriff's Safe School Task Force

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Vigo County Sheriff's Department and the Vigo County School Corporation joined forces in an effort to increase school safety.    

Sheriff Greg Ewing now leads a new group called the Sheriff's Safe School Task Force.

Ewing says this task force is still in the early stages and needs to be developed.

The group includes Sheriff Ewing, local safety experts, Superintendent Danny Tanoos, possibly a few principals and individuals from the community.
    
The group's mission will solely focus in on school safety and how to advance safety throughout our county.

Vigo County School Corporation Superintendent Danny Tanoos says, “So this will be a single focused committee, looking strictly at school safety and how we can better insure that our students and staff are safe every day."

The Sheriff's Safe School Task Force will meet for the first time sometime next week.

Sheriff Ewing says they plan to discuss options and having three deputies placed at three middle schools in Vigo County.   
    
The three selected officers would also be responsible for checking-in on the elementary schools.
    
Ewing says he wants to have the officers established as efficiently and effectively as possible.
