TERRE HAUTE., Ind. (WTHI) - A recent report from the Department of Education revealed more than 50 percent of Vigo County students rely on the free or reduced lunch program.

The federal funded program serves the entire nation, and in Vigo County, it serves three-quarters of the students in nine area schools.

In all, 18 schools qualify for the federal summer program that serves students throughout the warmer months as well. To qualify for that, the percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch services must be greater than half.

A new program implemented this year in two Vigo County Schools offers students fresh produce three times a week. That same grant money also serves up a buffet of produce once a month. In February, the focus was root vegetables. They also do melons, berries, and other popular items for the students.

All of these efforts are in hopes of being sure students stay full at school and don't go hungry when they leave.
