TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Kindergartners at some Wabash Valley schools are getting a lesson in literacy courtesy of some men in their communities.

It’s all part of a program called “Real Men Read” that brings men who are active in their communities into classrooms each month to read to students.

Those students, in turn, get their own copy of the month’s book to take home.

Participants say the program is designed to inspire a love of books among students.

“It brings a role model into the classroom, a male role model to show them that … it’s cool to read,” said participant Gary Morrison. “Having business people and leaders in the community coming in to show them that there’s something they can shoot for … it’s a hoot.”

The program is supported by the United Way.
