No federal charges in mail tampering case

CLAY CO., Ind. (WTHI) - Clay Co. Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call about mailbox tampering on S.R. 340, between Co. Rd. 200 W. and Co. Rd. 300 W.  Upon arrival, deputies noted pieces of scattered mail along the roadside.

Deputies spoke with a witness, whose information led to a residence where two juveniles were questioned about the matter.

As a results from the second investigation, deputies discovered the juveniles entered several mailboxes along S.R. 340.  The juveniles sorted through what mail interested them and tossed what wasn’t, and kept several items from the mailboxes.  The two juveniles were later transported to a juvenile detention facility until they can appear in court.

According to the Clay County Sheriff's Department, the juveniles will not face federal charges. They say the U.S. Postal Inspection reports in some cases involving juveniles, they don't file federal charges. The two will likely face charges in Clay County.

Deputies contacted several of the victims and informed them of the situation.  They also have informed the victims that there may be missing mail that may go unnoticed until other problems arise.

If you live along S.R. 340 in Clay Co., IN, between Co. Rd. 200 W. and Co. Rd. 300 W., deputies are asking you to inspect your mailboxes for tampering.  Monitor your bills to ensure you are not missing any pieces of mail which would cause other problems.
