WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Police may be closer to an arrest in a bizarre police chase-turned river rescue.

West Terre Haute Police continue their investigation after one suspect got away Friday night after jumping into the icy Wabash River.

West Terre Haute Police are hoping the runaway suspect will soon join Lee Bemis in the Vigo County Jail.

Bemis was arrested on the scene after jumping into the Wabash River Friday night.

Police said they stopped Bemis and another person for a traffic stop but the two took off.

While Bemis is behind bars the search continues for this second suspect.

Now, police said they believe they're getting closer to an arrest but at this time don't want to release the suspect's name.

"It's a strange situation I personally wouldn't jump in the Wabash River in sub-zero temperatures to try and escape on a minor call, it's a minor incident that could have cost some guys their lives," West Terre Haute Police Chief Steven Creasey said.

"We have a possible second subject right now that's in a local hospital, admitted himself under a false name so at this point we're just trying to link him to the incident," Creasey said.

The second suspect is wanted on other warrants.

Creasey said they will pursue the suspect once they're released from the hospital.

News 10 will update you as soon as an arrest is made in this case.

Meanwhile, the other suspect, Lee Bemis is awaiting trial.
