Just before 11:00 p.m., the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from man at 4400 S. 8th St., Terre Haute, which he stated he had just killed his wife with a knife.

On Tuesday, Spitler appeared in court, facing one preliminary charge of murder. Spitler is being held without bond.
When asked by Judge David Bolk whether he would like to make a statement, Spitler paused and said only "I killed my wife."

"We do not have a known motive at this time. The motive may never be known," said Clark Cottom with the Vigo County Sheriff's Department. "The speculation does nothing but hurt the people who really care about her the most."
