Jarrett sentenced in 2011 slaying

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Philadelphia man who pleaded guilty to a fatal shooting in Terre Haute last summer was formally sentenced Monday morning.

Police first arrested Charles Jarrett in September 2011, on allegations that he shot and killed Kenard Gipson, 32, of Chicago at a home on South 8th St. in Terre Haute. Authorities believe the shooting was part of a botched robbery.

Prosecutors first charged Jarrett with murder, attempted armed robbery and failure to register as a sex offender.

This July, though, Jarrett pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Monday, a Vigo County judge accepted that plea agreement and sentenced Jarrett to 45 years with the Department of Corrections, with five of those years suspended and 40 years in prison. Jarrett will also receive

When speaking with News 10 after the sentencing, Jarrett declined to give a statement to the victim’s family but did give a message to those he described as “snitches.”

“I’d like to give a shout out to all the snitches,” Jarrett said. “This 40 to 20 (year sentence) wouldn’t be possible without you.”
