TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Doctor Kamal Tiwari was indicted by a grand jury for fraud and other charges involving bodily injury.

Tiwari works with the Pain Management Center in Terre Haute on South 4th Street and has an office in Bloomington.

Tiwari is accused of prescribing narcotics to patients with a history of drug abuse.

Officials said he'd have patients undergo invasive procedures they didn't need to get the drugs.

Then he would allegedly bill the insurance companies, making money.

He allegedly prescribed narcotics to one patient with a history of drug abuse.

Officials said she died at the age of 27, linked to that drug usage.

"[It's like] let me do this to you and I'll give you those pills and after we do this to you, you're going to need these pills and when you want to come back and get more pills I get to do this again," U.S. Attorney Timothy Morrison said.

This isn't the first time Tiwari's been in trouble with the law, there's still a case pending from 2008.

Tiwari is accused of treating more than 1,800 patients and re-using some of the syringes on multiple patients.

While these cases remain under investigation, Tiwari's medical license is still active.

"The Attorney General's Office is still doing discovery and some depositions and at that point the Board will have a full hearing to determine whether discipline should be taken against his license," Kristen Kelley of the Indiana State Medical Board said.

Officials said in period of five years Tiwari was reimbursed $21 million by insurance companies.

News 10 did call both of Tiwari's offices, the Terre Haute office declined to comment.

There was no answer at his Bloomington office.

News 10 also stopped by Tiwari's home in Bloomington Monday afternoon, a woman answered the door and declined to comment.
