TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A weekend fire ruled as arson and remains under investigation.

It happened at a house in the 1300 block of Maple Avenue in Terre Haute about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Fire officials said a woman and her boyfriend were sleeping upstairs when they noticed smoke.

When they went to check it out, a burning mattress was blocking the staircase, forcing them to jump out of a second story window.

Officials said there were other people sleeping downstairs before the fire started, when crews arrived on the scene they were not at the home.

They are currently interviewing "people of interest."

The couple was taken to Union Hospital with back and leg injuries.

Their names are not being released at this time.
