TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Friday morning, a truck full of cats and dogs arrived behind the Terre Haute City Hall.

Twenty-four hours prior, the pets in the truck were shipped away to Bloomington, Ind. to be spayed or neutered at a low cost.

Fourteen of the cat-filled cages were Steve Smith's.

"Basically, two of them were dropped off at the house, then a big tom showed up," Smith said.

Within three months, two cats multiplied into 14 cats.

"Real quickly, we realized that if we didn't do something about it soon. If we didn't take care of the problem right away, in another six months, we may have 50, 60 cats," Smith said.

Smith knew he had to do something quick.

"If we are contributing to the fact that they are staying around our house, we at least have to be responsible enough to take care of them," Smith said.

Smith was also able to fix them a lot cheaper than taking them to a local vet.

"A program like this just made the difference," Smith said.
