“Autism Spectrum Disorder, or A.S.D., is a term used to describe a group of complex disorders of brain development. The disorders are characterized in varying degrees by difficulties with social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and repetitive behaviors, possibly the presence of repetitive behaviors, like hand flapping, or rocking back and forth to self-soothe. A.S.D. can also be related with intellectual disabilities, but it’s not necessarily present. There are a lot of children with an A.S.D. that excel in areas: visual skills, music, math, and that type of thing.
" If we talk about Autism and that spectrum, Asperger’s is considered to be on the higher end of the spectrum. And most noticeably there is no delay in speech development or motor development. "We recommend having your child screened as soon as possible if you suspect that they have any symptoms that put them on the spectrum, because symptoms start to show themselves as soon as two or three years old. Sometimes even sooner. It takes a lot of patience, a lot of observational skills, working closely with your child and trying to figure out what works best for them.
“Harsha Behavioral Center is actually hosting a support group for families and friends and loved ones of people that are diagnosed on the spectrum. That will take place on Wednesday, March 20 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. here at Harsha Behavioral Center. And if you would like more information or have any other questions, contact us at (812) 298-8888.”
