Walk Now for Autism in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - We're keeping an Eye on your Health.

Thursday's Health Watch 10 focuses in on the upcoming Walk Now for Autism in Terre Haute.

On Saturday, the Vigo County Fairgrounds will be filled with people taking part in the 5th annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks.

Autism is a neurological disorder that affects the way children and adults communicate and interact in social situations.

It's often called a spectrum disorder because the disorder can be mild, or in some cases, very severe.

With new statistics showing 1 out of 88 children being diagnosed with autism and no known cause or cure for it, this walk helps raise money for research and support.

"The main thing I want people to know about Autism, the reason we do the walk is, to raise awareness, but also these children are like every other child. They may learn differently. They may do things differently, but it's interesting how they like the same things with the video games and animals and friends as other kids do," said Debbie Beard, organizer of the Terre Haute Walk Now for Autism.

Opening ceremonies for Saturday's walk kick off at 10:45 a.m. eastern with the walk starting at 11 a.m.

During the walk, there will be a resource fair so families can get information about services for their loved one.

Again, all the money raised goes to Autism Speaks for research and advocacy to hopefully help find the causes and a cure for this disorder.
