TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Mosquitoes have been a big problem this summer, and West Nile is a concern even though we have not had any cases yet.
Every year between June and the first frost, the Vigo County Health Department tests for mosquitoes. The collected eggs and captured mosquitoes are sent to the Indiana State Health Department to test for the West Nile Virus.
About fifty eggs and bugs are collected every day. If any eggs test positive, the state will contact the county health departments to take action.
A few counties in Indiana had mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus. There haven’t been any mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile in Vigo County.
"There have been no human cases in the county. We still want people to take precautions because we do know that it's out there. We've had it in years past," Vigo County Health Department Media Coordinator, Megan Bland said.
The mosquitoes will continue to be tested until the fall.
The county is not collecting birds this year due to budget cuts.
