TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - With the New Year underway, many families are taking down their decorations and finding a new home for their live Christmas tree.
The Sisters of Providence at St. Mary-of-the-Woods are collecting used trees in hopes of recycling them. Once they are collected, the trees will be run through a chipper, and the chips will be used as fuel for a biomass boiler which heats several buildings on campus.
Trees can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at a parking lot across from the horse barn on campus.
There are other environmentally-friendly ways to dispose of live trees, including mulching them or using them as habitat for fish, birds and other animals. To learn about other options, click here .
