Container gardening

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - With summer just around the corner, many in the Wabash Valley are preparing vegetable gardens.

For those without the equipment to till a garden or without space to plant one, container gardening could be a good alternative.

Those containers can range from terra cotta pots or whiskey barrels to larger raised-bed gardens.

Raised beds are essentially boxes made of wood, placed on the ground and planted with crops.

The type of wood used for these projects is often a source of debate among gardeners.

Some prefer untreated woods like cedar out of concern that treated lumber could leach chemicals into the soil.

Others, however, use treated wood for its durability and note the lumber industry has phased out many of the dangerous preservatives once used on wood.

Experts recommend placing a container garden in a sunny area to help plant growth.

Check back with News 10 for more information on container gardening, or share photos and tips from your own container garden.
