TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Between heavy rains this spring and lots of heat in July and August, it’s been a tough summer for our News 10 container gardens.
Still, some of our plants are pulling through.
The tomato plants in our raised bed garden are still going strong and are producing some ripe tomatoes, and the pepper plants there are starting to produce buds.
However, the seeds we planted in that raised bed (for onions and cucumbers) didn’t sprout this summer. We suspect that’s because the water isn’t draining quite as well as it should … something we’ll work to fix for next year by adding some organic matter or some coarse sand.
Meanwhile, the recent heat has been rough on our whiskey-barrel balcony garden. While the green beans and radishes we planted in the barrel sprouted and grew, the heat radiating from the concrete balcony floor proved just too much for them.
Still, a number of our viewers have managed to grow healthy container gardens of their own. To see photos of those gardens or to add your own, click here .
