Why are there so many fiber ads?

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A lot of television commercials are starting to focus on fiber. What's so good about fiber?

Well, for one, you're probably not getting enough; and two, it's a lot better for you than you may think.

Every day, you're supposed to get between 25 to 38 grams of fiber in your diet. Unfortunately.. the average person only gets around 15.

Before you blame it on the lack of foods, fiber is readily available and it's pretty cheap.

"Fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, those are great sources of fiber in one's diet," said Marissa Trout, a registered dietician at Regional Hospital.

The big question is, 'what does fiber do?'

Most people probably think it only keeps you regular. However, it actually has multiple health benefits.

"A reduced risk of colon-rectal type of cancers, type-2 diabetes, there's a lipid lowering effect associated with fiber intake; specifically the LDL, which is the bad cholesterol that many people are concerned about," said Trout.

In addition, having a diet with lot of fiber could help you lose weight without a lot of work.

"It satisfies satiety, which means you feel fuller longer," said Trout, "so you're able to consumer less, which ultimately results generally in weight reduction."

So the next time you're in the grocery store, read some labels, and you'll be on your way to a healthy fiber-filled diet.
