Thousands injured annually by fireworks

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - With so many local firework displays being postponed, many people will be hosting their own holiday festivals.

Even though the fireworks are smaller, they can still be dangerous.

We're only two days away from the flares and booms of the Fourth of July. While everyone enjoys the lights, thousands of people are injured every year by not handling fireworks properly.

Fireworks caused almost nine thousand injuries in a recent calendar year.

Surprisingly the biggest culprit wasn't bigger items, but sparklers. These sticks can heat up to 1800 degrees and are used in close proximity.

When using bigger fireworks, it is always best to keep a bucket of water on hand in case things get out of control.

Especially in this dry weather, a problem can spread very quickly.

No matter the size, it's important never to leave children unsupervised near fireworks.

As all parents know, kids are curious. Of those nearly nine thousand injuries, 54% were with children.

When storing fireworks, it is best to leave them in a cool place.

Finally, make sure you dispose of used fireworks correctly. They may be dead, but they're still hot. Soak them in water to prevent their heat from catching something else on fire.
