Packing school lunches made easy

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - With the school year well underway, you may be looking for some good lunch ideas for your son or daughter.

There's a struggle though. You may want them to pack something healthy while your child may want something fun.

When walking up and down the aisles of the grocery store, some items stand out to children while others do not.

However, as a parent, you want to make sure your child is eating healthy.

Here are a few tips to follow.

First, it's important to use balance. Try to make 80% of your meals healthy and the other 20% fun. This will make everyone happy.

Second, avoid pre-packaged meals. These are often high in calories and filled with processed foods.

Third, try substituting out some unhealthy items for healthy ones that still taste great.

Instead of chips, try something with more whole grains and less fat like Trisquit or pretzels.

Also, instead of candy, try a granola bar. These come in many flavors and are packed with nutrients children need.

Finally, avoid the sugary beverages, and go for water with flavor packages. This gives taste without the cavities.

Doing all this will give your child a meal that you approve of, and one that they won't want to trade away at the lunch table.
