Halloween spending to hit record high

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Whether you're just getting a scary mask or a full fledged costume, chances are you're going to be spending some money this Halloween.

Three weeks before Halloween, and Deans Party Mania in Terre Haute is already seeing scary items fly off the shelves.

"It's kind of a last minute holiday. Right now, people come in to get decorations, start decorating their house for trick or treaters," said Amber Stephenson, General Manager. "Later on come the costumes."

This year, a record $8 billion is expected to be spent on Halloween items in the United States. The average person will spend just over $28.

"We've had a lot of people buying the masks," said Amber. "We've got a lot of really cool scary masks in this year, couple costumes as always; we've seen a lot of people going in themes."

However, you don't have to fork over that much.

An easy way to save money is to accessorize. Use friends costumes from previous years or look for costume parts in different places.

While it may not have everything you're looking for, a thrift store can be a great place to pick up smaller pieces that can complete any attire.

Also, for younger children, try completing a costume with some face paint.

Instead of spending all that money on a mask they'll only wear once, this will let you be more creative.

Doing all this will help you have a scary good time without frightening you wallet.
