TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The first year of college is a time for growth both in education and in life. However, it's also known for a growth in weight called the "Freshman 15."
There are easy ways to avoid the unnecessary weight gain.
Surprisingly, one of the best things you can do is eat regularly. Don't skip meals.
People who skip meals often make poor food choices to fill themselves up.
Also, don't go for seconds. Most of the time at home you didn't have the choices of tacos, followed by pizza, followed by ice cream. Try to limit yourself to one or two courses.
Speaking of meals, that fourth meal can really be a killer.
Any food eaten after 9 p.m. or anytime around bed can be hard for your body to burn off. If you need a late night snack, try something healthy like fruit.
In addition, watch how much you drink. This can be one of the biggest reasons for weight gain in college.
Those alcoholic beverages can really add up, totaling around 150 calories each.
Finally, make sure that you're getting enough sleep. Even though you may think staying up burns more calories, studies have shown that not getting enough sleep contributes to weight gain.
