BRAZIL, Ind. (WTHI) - How do small towns compete with malls and large corporate stores during the holidays?
The first thing you notice when you walk into The Seasoned Wick is the smell of fall. That comes from the homemade, soy-based candles on the side wall.
Everything in Lori Brown's store is made by hand and by local community members.
"This is things that are made right here,” said Lori.
According to a nationwide survey out this year, 43 percent of small business owners LIKE LORI are expecting higher revenues this year compared to last year.
Lori's hoping to compete with the larger stores as the holidays near.
She believes they can because they offer something unique.
"Yep, you cannot get any of these items in a store like that,” said Lori.
That’s why experts say small businesses can compete with large stores, even during holidays. Small shop owners are hoping people will start buying locally and supporting their own community.
Lori thinks the success of her store shows people are getting back to wanting quality, locally-made gifts.
“All of our vendors, a lot of the stuff they make, they take time and it’s not something that is mass-produced. They’re taking their time and doing things with love. And that’s how we look at it,” said Lori.
Lori continued, “If I have something that’s homemade, I cherish that more than something that’s bought, you know, in a hurry.”
Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping locally-owned stores.
